Hometown Appliance & Electronics provides a wide array of appliance options for a new home, kitchen remodel or replacement of older, less-efficient models. This family-owned business that opened in March 2010 also offers expert advice and service that few other stores can match.

Owner Erik Schneider is an experienced carpenter in both commercial and residential construction. "This allows me to come to the customer's home and look at a customer's existing kitchen and recommend what is going to work best for their layout," he says.

Follow these tips when selecting appliances:

DIMENSIONS

Know the dimensions of the space where you are placing your appliances. This is especially important when selecting a refrigerator. Schneider recommends measuring the height and width of the space. "Don't measure the appliance you are replacing. There are many more options in today's appliances," he says.

COLOR & STYLE

Most customers have a color scheme in mind when shopping for appliances. Today's options include a rainbow of colors as well as stainless steel finishes. Refrigerator styles in particular have been upgraded over the past few years, Schneider says. Most consumers are familiar with the following refrigerator styles: refrigerator on top/freezer on the bottom; freezer on the top/refrigerator below; and the freezer/refrigerator side-by-side model.

The newest, and currently most expensive, option is the French door refrigerator, he says. This style features four doors - a side-by-side refrigerator with no divisions on the top, a middle refrigerated drawer and a bottom freezer. A French door refrigerator works best for a number of families, Schneider says. The top space will accommodate large trays and cakes while the middle drawer is perfect for items the family frequently want, such as juice boxes and fruit.

PUTTING A PACKAGE TOGETHER

Almost every manufacturer has options and you can choose an appliance package that includes all the same brand or similar styles, Schneider says. "It's all about the look, the aesthetics. Everything has the same handles. And with multiple appliance purchases from the same manufacturer, you are eligible for rebates," he says.

THE COST

Having a budget in mind is important, Schneider says. Most appliances, such as a refrigerator and stove will function the same at different price points. "With a dishwasher, you truly get what you pay for. If you go cheap on a dishwasher, expect a cheap performance."

QUICK TIPS

  1. Know the dimensions of the space where your appliances are going, particularly if you're getting a new refrigerator.
  2. Since most appliances now come in a wide array of colors and finishes, know that you can probably match the decor of your home if you know what to look for.
  3. If you're buying more than one appliance, keep in mind that you can usually find package deals on appliances that match or compliment one another.
  4. Have a budget in mind so you can review the different options and styles available.
