I grew up in this area and I am very excited to raise my family in Northwest Indiana. I appreciate the small town values people in this area still live by and that is the back ground for the name Hometown Appliance and Electronics. Our company’s motto is "Families Serving Families, Welcome Home" so please stop in to say hello and see what we have to offer.

I have been an active member with the Lake County Builders Industry Association (BIA) for the past 6 years and was nominated to the board of directors 2 years ago by the association. Prior to getting into the appliance industry I worked in both commercial and residential construction as a carpenter. I understand the construction business and I feel this gives me an advantage over most people in my industry. I can look at blueprints and cabinet layout and understand what is needed and what will work out best. This also allows me to come to the customer’s home and look at a customers existing kitchen and recommend what is going to work best for their layout.

Simple steps to prolong life of your appliances

Michelle Krueger | Times Correspondent

When it comes to protecting your investment in household appliances, it’s wise to spend some time now on a little preventative maintenance in order to keep them in top working condition – or spend what could be a significant amount of money later, repairing or replacing them.

"Today's appliances have more electronics and control boards than appliances of the past," said Erik Schneider, President of Hometown Appliance & Electronics in St. John. "We suggest putting a surge protector on as many appliances as you can. We sell single outlet surge protectors to a lot of our customers when they are purchasing especially a new refrigerator or washer and dryer. With the severe weather we have been having even the littlest power surge can cause major repairs for today’s appliances."

Beyond surge protection, the efficiency and length of service of these appliances can be improved by following the simple advice Schneider shares with all his customers.

"Even though refrigerators breathe out of the bottom, instead of from the back like they used to, coils still exist that need to be cleaned to keep your fridge running smoothly during these hot summer months," he said. "Removing the kick plate on the bottom allows easy access to the bottom where you can check drip pans for excessive moisture, coils for dirt and debris, and overall cleanliness of the fridge."

In addition, washer and dryer maintenance, which often gets overlooked, can also help prevent floods or fires. "In your washer, remove any and all debris from the drum so that it does not work its way into the pump. If you own a front load washer, keeping the washer door open during down times will allow the machine to breathe and eliminate that musty smell that some people complain about. Check your washer water lines for any bubbling or deterioration in the lines. Regularly checking them will be easier to deal with than a burst line that floods the surrounding area," Schneider said. “Everyone has heard the horror stories about dryer vent fires yet most people forget to check the vent run for excessive lint build-up. Lint brushes can be purchased in stores or you can hire a professional to come out and do it for you. This leads to a better air flow for the dryer and peace of mind if you leave the dryer running when you leave the house — like most of us do."

On another topic, Schneider has a time-saving tip that his customers with stainless steel appliances genuinely appreciate. "It appears that the stainless steel craze is here to stay. As more manufacturers come up with new ways to integrate it into appliance packages the task of cleaning it will remain," he said. "We have a lot of stainless to keep clean here on our sales floor and have found that using the orange clean pledge (orange label, yellow cap) and a microfiber cloth is the easiest way to keep our showroom looking fantastic. Always spray the cleaner on the cloth and try and follow the grain of the stainless. It is not exactly a wood grain but each manufacturer polishes the stainless different and keeping with the grain eliminates streaks and patches."

For those who like the look of stainless, but want to reduce the amount of cleaning required, Schneider typically recommends a couple of different options. “Whirlpool now offers two color combinations called white and black ice. The overall color of the appliance is black or white but with stainless accents like trim pieces, knobs and handles. It gives you an elegant look without all of that stainless to clean," he said. “The Frigidaire Gallery and Professional series has a smudge-proof stainless steel that gives you stainless steel without all of the worrying. It is real stainless steel with a protective coating that reduces fingerprints and smudges making it easier to clean."

Hometown Appliance & ElectronicsLet Us Help You Put Together Your Dream Kitchen

Hometown Appliance & Electronics provides a wide array of appliance options for a new home, kitchen remodel or replacement of older, less-efficient models. This family-owned business that opened in March 2010 also offers expert advice and service that few other stores can match.

Owner Erik Schneider is an experienced carpenter in both commercial and residential construction. "This allows me to come to the customer's home and look at a customer's existing kitchen and recommend what is going to work best for their layout," he says.

Follow these tips when selecting appliances:

DIMENSIONS

Know the dimensions of the space where you are placing your appliances. This is especially important when selecting a refrigerator. Schneider recommends measuring the height and width of the space. "Don't measure the appliance you are replacing. There are many more options in today's appliances," he says.

COLOR & STYLE

Most customers have a color scheme in mind when shopping for appliances. Today's options include a rainbow of colors as well as stainless steel finishes. Refrigerator styles in particular have been upgraded over the past few years, Schneider says. Most consumers are familiar with the following refrigerator styles: refrigerator on top/freezer on the bottom; freezer on the top/refrigerator below; and the freezer/refrigerator side-by-side model.

The newest, and currently most expensive, option is the French door refrigerator, he says. This style features four doors - a side-by-side refrigerator with no divisions on the top, a middle refrigerated drawer and a bottom freezer. A French door refrigerator works best for a number of families, Schneider says. The top space will accommodate large trays and cakes while the middle drawer is perfect for items the family frequently want, such as juice boxes and fruit.

PUTTING A PACKAGE TOGETHER

Almost every manufacturer has options and you can choose an appliance package that includes all the same brand or similar styles, Schneider says. "It's all about the look, the aesthetics. Everything has the same handles. And with multiple appliance purchases from the same manufacturer, you are eligible for rebates," he says.

THE COST

Having a budget in mind is important, Schneider says. Most appliances, such as a refrigerator and stove will function the same at different price points. "With a dishwasher, you truly get what you pay for. If you go cheap on a dishwasher, expect a cheap performance."

QUICK TIPS

  • Know the dimensions of the space where your appliances are going, particularly if you're getting a new refrigerator.
  • Since most appliances now come in a wide array of colors and finishes, know that you can probably match the decor of your home if you know what to look for.
  • If you're buying more than one appliance, keep in mind that you can usually find package deals on appliances that match or compliment one another.
  • Have a budget in mind so you can review the different options and styles available.
